we are glad to see the casino opened in singapore recently, despite whether it was a good thing or not, the date was very interesting, especially for us Chinese. that day when the casino opened was exactly the Lunar New year -- the most auspicious day of the Chinese calender.
would that mean good luck for all the gamblers or for the profits of the casino, it may be very hard for us to know. however, the combination is interesting, casino, on the one hand, is the symbol of wealth and property which singapore government spent s$ 4.7 billion and is highly expected by the government; on the other hand, people still like to believe something which is not the mainstream of today's so-called science and technology. would that be a little bit contradictroy?
the result gives us several points:
1. traditional ideas are still rooted inside many Chinese
2. money is in the first order-- people would work for it using every method
many times we are trying to find some further meaning of our life, but the struggle would be in vain, maybe casino is one of the most direct answer--money. no matter for the government or for the gambler themselevs. no wonder this society is run by money, but is that all we want to pursue with our whole life?
in another word, our life is like gambling, every chance we all have winner, difference vary from the strtegy we use, opponets we have, and the most important--our luck. that is also why the casino is opened in the Lunar New year.

I really agree that the issue of casino in Singapore is quite controversial. It costs a lot while it can be very beneficial. Some people are complaining that the government is using money from taxpayers to build something which is not beneficial to most of the citizens. Since the casino will only be open to foreigners, many citizens think it is useless. They prefer the money to be used on city facilities and technology. However, some think that the casino will be very profitable. The government can earn a huge amount of money and then use it to the country. Moreover, the casino is a symbol of prosperity. It will attract many tourists, which will bring positive effect to the economy.
回复删除Gambling, in our traditional thought, is a bad thing. It makes people addicted and then destroys their happy life. However, I think, nowadays the casino is under the control of government and people will more likely to gamble moderately. It will bring more pleasure than tragedy. It is really a new event in Singapore. Although there are examples done by other countries, Singapore should still find its own way to run the business. Nevertheless, there are still many rules need to be perfected. I really hope the casino will bring blessings instead of curses to Singapore.

I agree that there is some meaning of opening the casino on the CNY day. Chinese people has been paying much attention to their luck. The CNY day is regarded as a day full of luck. In my opinion, government chose this day for two reasons. First, a good beginning is half of success. The first day of casino was thought to be full of luck, suggesting that afterwards more profits would flow into their pocket. Second, the CNY day is a big holiday in China, and the casino was thought to attract many Chinese 'wealthy' tourists.
回复删除For Chinese people, gambling has been an entertainment for thousands of years, and it is still quite popular nowadays. A chinese saying goes like that, a little bit gambling can relieve people.Unfortunately, quite a few Chinese people are addicted to gambling. These gamblers definitely harm their families, and may even bring chaos to the society. Although the profits from casino is considerable, the potential influence on people's mind cannot be ignored.
