recently 2 government adverts were banned by the Britain's advertising watchdog because the ASA thought that they exaggerated the threat of the climate change in the adverts.
we need to consider this issue from two aspects. on the one hand, the government may try to emphasis the importance of climate change to the public so that they can take it seriously, which improves the efficiency of the adverts. on the other hand, the adverts themselves are threats in people's everyday's lives, it may cause anxiety and even panic to some degree if the adverts overstate the level of danger. this way, the side effect is very obvious and if it dominates the influence the advert is absolutely a failure. simlilar case can be like the movie 2012 which describes the doomsday was so impressive that many people were really worried after the show. of course that was not true but we can find how vulnerable people's minds are.
so be a responsible advertiser and the way you express is important.

casino--a tradition in the new era
from:
http://news.alibaba.com/article/detail/markets/100249837-1-update-1-singapore%2527s-first-casino-opens.html
we are glad to see the casino opened in singapore recently, despite whether it was a good thing or not, the date was very interesting, especially for us Chinese. that day when the casino opened was exactly the Lunar New year -- the most auspicious day of the Chinese calender.
would that mean good luck for all the gamblers or for the profits of the casino, it may be very hard for us to know. however, the combination is interesting, casino, on the one hand, is the symbol of wealth and property which singapore government spent s$ 4.7 billion and is highly expected by the government; on the other hand, people still like to believe something which is not the mainstream of today's so-called science and technology. would that be a little bit contradictroy?
the result gives us several points:
1. traditional ideas are still rooted inside many Chinese
2. money is in the first order-- people would work for it using every method
many times we are trying to find some further meaning of our life, but the struggle would be in vain, maybe casino is one of the most direct answer--money. no matter for the government or for the gambler themselevs. no wonder this society is run by money, but is that all we want to pursue with our whole life?
in another word, our life is like gambling, every chance we all have winner, difference vary from the strtegy we use, opponets we have, and the most important--our luck. that is also why the casino is opened in the Lunar New year.

Comments on local issue
Title: Pastor Ronny Tan Speaks
Website:http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_490426.html
http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_488719.html
Pastor Ronny Tan, the leader of Lighthouse Evangelism-----an independent church with 12,000 members, made his apology to the leaders of the Singapore Buddhist Federation and Taoist Federation with his promise that he will not disparage other religions on 10 Feb, 2010.
Causes of this incident are some videos of Pastor Tan showing his contempt of Buddhism and Taoism which provoked some discussion and rebukes from public. Even the Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng and the Internal Security Department were involved to appease those angry believers. The church was told off to eliminate any offensive documents and materials. Pastor Tan apologized to the leaders of local Buddhism and Taoism in person. Besides, his family, the National Council of churches of Singapore, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Deputy Prime Minister all made statements to show their approval to Pastor Tan’s apology and religion equality.
Seeing all these reactions of this incident, some people may think that they just made a big fuss over a minor issue. However, I think this is just a perfect example of how Singapore government and society maintain harmony with such many diverse religions. As we all know, religion conflicts have always been a main factor of wars. And Singapore itself has also suffered from the conflicts among different races and religions. Thus today the government pays a lot of attention on religion issues. From those many departments in charge of religion issues to various public holidays, we can see the government’s hard works. As a result, when wars in middle-east are going on, when neighbor countries are dealing with domestic religion conflicts, Singapore can still enjoy its steady development with a harmony society. Thus I think the government really did a good job. In addition, some non-government organizations also play important roles in this issue.

It's time to say goodbye to the shark's fin
Sources: http://comment.straitstimes.com/showthread.php?t=30011
& http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking+News/Singapore/Story/STIStory_487572.html
As the Chinese New Year is coming, many people are discussing the delicacies of the reunion dinner. In Singapore, the shark’s fin seems to be a popular dish in the dinner. Although compared to other seafood, the shark’s fin is more expensive, some Singaporeans who are able to afford it seem to enjoy this delicacy. Unfortunately, it is very fierce to the sharks that only their fins are cut down, and without fins, the sharks cannot live long. As it is known to us all that the population of the shark is getting smaller rapidly, and maybe now it has been a kind of endangered animals. Therefore, to continue eating the shark’s fin or not, it is a question.
I have tried the shark’s fin in China. Frankly speaking, it is not as delicious as expected. It tasted just like fensi(粉丝), something like noodles. I don’t know why many people are fond of it. Some people say that it’s because the shark’s fin is extremely nutrient. I doubt it, really. And even if the shark’s fin is extremely nutrient, I think people can absorb the same amount nutrition from other food instead. In fact, I think there are two reasons that people enjoy eating shark’s fin. Firstly, it is the tradition. There is no need explain, I think. Then, the second reason, and a much more important reason, is that people want to show off their wealth through eating such kind of delicacy. We know that people intend to compare their own wealth with others’. How? The answer is to show off themselves as much as possible! Despite the ordinary taste of the shark’s fin, as long as I have enough money to buy much of them and you have no money, then I am wealthier than you, and I have a higher status than you. I think this kind of thought really kill the innocent sharks. Actually, I want to suggest that please give up the shark’s fin and give a way to sharks to live. There are many things for the wealthy to compare with others, and it’s hard to understand why they prefer the shark’s fin. The sharks are roaring in the sea, for help. They are endangered now. Since the traditions can be changed and the things for comparison are various, please say goodbye to the shark’s fin and let sharks live for a longer time.

response to "risk appetite returning"
sourse:http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_473560.html
As we all know, after the economic crisis, the global economy is seriously affected. For the investors who has lost a lot of wealth in the economic crisis were no long willing or dared to take risk with their money. They were afraid that they will lose more and eventually become a poor guy. Indeed, this phenomenon is quite understandable. In brief, it was all because of the economic crisis. people lose confidence in investment, and consequently the investment market is in depression in along period of time.
This news indicated a returning risk appetite among the investors. It appears that the investors gain back their confidence towards investment gradually and the investment market tend to be recovered from the recession as well.
From my point of view, it is really a good news for both the investment market and the whole economic situations. Once the investors are willing to invest again, the market will be activated soon and kept active. Since the investment market is a segment of the whole economy, and everything is inevitably connected, the recovery of the investment market will definitely pull up the development of other segments in the whole economy. This will significant result in the apparent inprovement of economy.
Another point in the news attracted me was that shares were the preferred investment for this group of investors. As what we have known, shares should be the safest way in investment which also enable investors to earn a large amout of money. I think this can reveal that people have learnt a lot from the loss in economic crisis to some extend. To avoid the big loss next time. it is wise for investors to learn some basic knowledge about investment. Another advisable choice is to think twice for their own investment. Hopefully, the economy is getting better and better. also, the investors can learn more and make ideal profit.
